Chess in Porto, from Campanhã to Maia and Leça

Chess in Porto runs on tournaments more than on weekly club nights. Sport Musas e Benfica stages yearly events in a hall, a garden and a public square, the Grupo de Xadrez do Porto plays at its own rooms, and around the city Maia, Leça da Palmeira and Vila Nova de Gaia add academies, summer opens, school leagues and district championships.

Chess960 in Porto and Leça

In Chess960 the pieces on the first rank are drawn into a new order before play, so nobody can lean on opening theory. Porto has a home for it: Sport Musas e Benfica holds a Fischer Random tournament each October and draws a fresh starting position for every round. Basquete de Leça has run a summer Chess960 festival at its premises in Leça da Palmeira, and the Grupo de Xadrez do Porto has held an open in the format at classical time controls.

No weekly Chess960 evening turned up in the area. Between these dates the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

Where these facts come from

What a card says is taken from pages anyone can open: club blogs and rule sheets, the federation's club list, tournament servers, the FIDE tournament list, council news and event listings. A fact that none of them states is shown as “not stated by sources”; it is never filled in from habit or likelihood.

Two dated lines sit on every card, one for the venue and one for the chess, and each takes its date from the newest trace we could find. How a card is put together, and the things this directory does not measure, are set out under sources and checks.
