Chess tournaments and series around Porto 24

Most chess in the Porto area that an outsider can find is a tournament. The district association moves its individual, team, youth and veteran championships between school halls and club rooms in Rio Tinto, Pedrouços, Porto, Ermesinde and Vila Nova de Gaia. Sport Musas e Benfica keeps a calendar of its own in the city: a recruitment tournament for players without a federation licence, a Swiss for licensed players, a club championship in its garden, a tournament on a public square and a Fischer Random day.

Summer belongs to two opens that fill about a week each, one at a technology park in Maia with a blitz played aboard a Douro river boat, the other in the municipal sports hall of Leça da Palmeira. School leagues and school tournaments fill the rest of the year in Maia, Porto and a Gaia shopping centre, and one-day events come up in Recarei, Covelo, Rio Tinto and São João da Madeira.
