Chess in Maia turns around one organiser, the Academia de Xadrez da Maia. At its premises in Pedrouços it runs a Rapid Cup, a Blitz Cup and a school league with sections for licensed and unlicensed pupils, and it has hosted district championships. Its website describes a club with competitive teams of every age and a training centre with classes at three levels.

The same academy is behind the Maia Chess Open, a festival held each August at the TECMAIA technology park, with a Masters section and one for players rated under 2000. With the town council it also organises the chess rounds of the municipal sports games, played in local schools and at the tennis complex, and a Liga da Maia appears in the tournament lists without a named venue. A second Maia club on the federation list, O Amanhã da Criança, shows only one small tournament of its own. Pedrouços sits on the edge of Porto, so city players reach it easily; ask the academy about free-training times, which the sources do not give.
